Cottages and Residences (No Longer Extant)

Medical Superintendent’s Residence

This building predated the hospital; it was already present on the Bartlett Ranch at the time of the acquisition by the State.

The “Villa”

The Villa was a residential building roughly located where Ward I was later built, and housed 20 employees. It was apparently already in poor condition by the end of the 1920s.

Note: This is a very old frame building and is in poor condition. It will be torn down soon and this site used for the erection of a modern building.1

Still under construction at the time the Historical Record’s pictures were taken, it seems likely that this house and its accompanying garage were designed by Alfred Eichler, as a sketch of it appears in his files as a “typical physician’s residence [for] California state institutions”.
