Administrative Reports

The administration of Mendocino State Hospital (MSH) published regular biennial (every two years) reports for most of the first few decades of its existence, but transitioned to irregularly publishing much shorter statistical reports in the 1930s. All documents presented here are official and include both the full long-form report that includes all the institutions in the California mental health system, as well as an extract from the Mendocino State Hospital-specific section.

Lastly, there are three annual reports for the hospital from the 1950s. These reports pertain only to MSH and not to other institutions in the state mental healthcare system.

MSH-specific Biennial Reports (1892-1896)

In the first few years of operation, the asylum (later renamed hospital) published its own biennial reports. The first biennial report was published before the asylum even opened its doors.

Department of Mental Hygiene Biennial Reports (1898-1920)

Beginning in 1898, the biennial reports were integrated into an overall department report.

Many of the early reports are on Hathitrust and were originally scanned from the University of Michigan library as part of the Google Library project. The annual reports were scanned by me from the California State Archives.
