Pomo News

The first permanent masthead of Pomo News, designed by patient Robert C. of Ward 12.

About the Pomo News

First published in 1948, The Pomo News was the weekly newspaper of Mendocino State Hospital (MSH), originally released every Tuesday. Over the years, it featured hospital news, campus updates, baseball game reports, advice columns – especially on faith and alcoholism – and creative submissions from patients. Produced collaboratively by patients and staff, The Pomo News also carried small advertisements from local Ukiah businesses. Today, it stands as a valuable window into everyday life at MSH and a testament to patient expression and creativity.

All patient names in the Pomo News were redacted, and only a patient’s name, last initial, and ward number were included when they were mentioned (e.g. “John Doe of Ward 7”). Staff member names, particularly doctors, are unredacted. Due to California state privacy laws, issues of the paper are being unsealed on a rolling 75-year gap basis; that’s why the first issues were only available to researchers like myself in 2023.

Issues of Pomo News were obtained and scanned by me from the California State Archives (F3886:45-53). For consistency, dates of publication are provided in ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD).
